Croatian legend and national team captain Luka Modric has officially signed a one-year contract with AC Milan at the age of 39, the Italian giants confirmed on Monday.

“AC Milan are delighted to announce Luka Modric has signed a contract with the club until 30 June 2026 with an option for a one-year extension until 30 June 2027,” read a statement from the 19-time Serie A champions.

Modric, who turns 40 in September, arrives at the San Siro from Real Madrid, ending a glittering 12-year spell in Spain. He joined Los Blancos from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 and has long been tipped for a move to Italy, especially after confirming in early June that he would not renew his Madrid contract.

The move had been foreshadowed last week by Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri, who said the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner would join the Rossoneri following the Club World Cup.

“I’m very happy to be here to start a new chapter in my career,” Modric said in a video shared on Milan’s official social media channels. “A big hug to everyone,” he added, smiling.

The veteran midfielder was in Milan on Monday for medical examinations. However, according to local reports, he won’t begin training with the squad until August.

Allegri, now in his second stint as Milan boss—having led them to their last Scudetto in 2011—is preparing his team for the new campaign. Their first official fixture of the season is set for August 17 in the Italian Cup.

Modric’s arrival adds experience and leadership to Milan’s midfield, as the club looks to reclaim domestic glory and push further in Europe.
