The Lebanese Army, along with the Lebanese Civil Defence and the Red Cross will dispatch an emergency relief team to conduct a search and rescue operation in Turkey following two deadly earthquakes that have so far killed nearly 2,000 people in Turkey and Syria. “We will dispatch the team today,” a Lebanese army spokesperson told The National. “Turkey asked for aid from the international community and so we are responding to their request.” The formation of an emergency response team comes following an initiative spearheaded by the country’s caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, to offer aid to the two affected nations. Lebanon’s emergency response team comes after a deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southeastern Turkey and northernwestern Syria overnight on Monday. Another powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake followed in the afternoon. Both countries have appealed for international aid, which has flooded in from countries across the world, including the UAE and the EU.
