Egypt strongly condemned on Sunday the Israeli attacks on Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza, calling them a grave violation of international humanitarian law and all established international norms.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, Egypt called for an immediate halt to all Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip, and for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid and relief supplies to the people of Gaza.
The ministry warned that the ongoing situation risks triggering a full-scale humanitarian catastrophe for which Israel bears full responsibility.
The statement also urged the international community to shoulder its responsibilities and intervene without delay to stop the blatant attacks on Gaza.
Egypt called for the activation of international legal mechanisms and the UN Charter to halt the violence—especially at a time when regional and international actors are actively working toward de-escalation and the revival of a ceasefire agreement.
An Israeli airstrike on Al-Ahli Arab Hospital—also known as the Baptist Hospital—in Gaza City has caused severe damage and forced the facility out of service, according to Gaza’s Civil Defense agency.
The strike came just minutes after the Israeli military issued an evacuation warning, the agency said in a statement. It added that the bombing destroyed the hospital’s emergency department, and its oxygen generation unit used for intensive care.
According to the official WAFA news agency, two missiles struck the hospital’s main building, sparking fires in the reception area, emergency and laboratory units, and the pharmacy.
Dozens of patients and injured individuals were evacuated and left lying in the streets surrounding the hospital.
Al-Ahli has been a critical healthcare provider for over one million residents in Gaza City and the northern governorates. Its destruction marks a significant blow to Gaza’s already overwhelmed and collapsing healthcare system.
According to Gaza health officials, 34 hospitals across the strip have now been destroyed or forced to shut down, along with dozens of health clinics.
The Baptist Hospital was also the site of a devastating massacre on October 17, 2023, in which more than 470 people were killed—including patients and displaced families sheltering on the hospital grounds.
On 18 March, Israel unleashed a brutal assault on Gaza, massacring over 1,400 Palestinians and injuring hundreds more, as Tel Aviv unilaterally ended the Egypt, Qatar, and US-brokered ceasefire that had been in place since 19 January, resuming its assault on Gaza.
Israel said the move aimed to compel Hamas to release all captives—dead and alive—immediately rather than during the agreed second phase.
This has raised the death toll to 50,886 documented fatalities, with an additional 115,875 wounded, the majority of whom are women and children.
