Egyptian authorities have opened an urgent investigation following the circulation of a controversial video showing unconventional celebrations inside a mosque during the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday (Mawlid al-Nabawi).

The footage, which quickly went viral on social media, has drawn widespread criticism for what many viewed as disrespectful and inappropriate conduct in a sacred space.

The video, reportedly filmed in a mosque in Cairo, depicts musical performances including drumming, chanting, and a traditional “tanoura” dancer spinning before a cheering crowd. Critics argue that the display violated religious norms and the sanctity of the mosque, prompting calls for accountability from religious and government institutions.

Egypt’s Ministry of Endowments confirmed that the mosque’s imam and administrative staff are under investigation. “We are committed to preserving the dignity of our places of worship and ensuring that religious occasions are observed with reverence and respect,” the ministry stated.

The incident comes just days after President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi attended a national ceremony marking the 1,500th anniversary of the Prophet’s birth, where he emphasized the importance of reviving ethical values and confronting extremism through enlightened religious discourse.

Religious scholars from Al-Azhar have also weighed in, urging restraint and proper guidance in public celebrations of Islamic occasions. The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar reiterated that Mawlid commemorations should reflect the Prophet’s teachings of humility, compassion, and moral integrity.

The investigation remains ongoing, and disciplinary measures are expected pending the outcome of official inquiries.
