U.S. Urges  Port Sudan to Acknowledge Chemical Weapons Violations

Port Sudan — The U.S. Department of State has called on Sudan’s de facto authorities in Port Sudan to recognize violations committed by the army involving the use of chemical weapons during the ongoing conflict that erupted in mid-April 2023.

In a statement posted on X by the Bureau of African Affairs, the State Department stressed: “The Government of Sudan must immediately acknowledge its violations, halt any further use of chemical weapons, and fully cooperate with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).”

The appeal follows Washington’s decision in May to impose sanctions on Sudanese army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, after evidence confirmed the use of chemical weapons in 2024. U.S. officials have repeatedly warned that such actions constitute grave breaches of international law and pose severe risks to civilians.

In October, the U.S. Ambassador to the OPCW reaffirmed that the allegations against Sudan’s army were based on “strong foundations,” underscoring Washington’s insistence on accountability and transparency.

The latest demand adds pressure on Sudan’s leadership, as the war continues to devastate the country and raise alarm over the use of prohibited weapons in the conflict.
