Cairo – An Egyptian terrorism court on Sunday sentenced Tarek Al‑Aryan, widely known as the “Brotherhood Poet,” to 15 years in prison on charges of attempted murder of a police officer and planning terrorist operations.
The First Circuit for Terrorism in Wadi Al‑Natroun issued the ruling after hearing the defense during Sunday’s session.
During the opening hearings of his trial, Al‑Aryan denied the charges, insisting that he is a poet with several published collections.
He stated that his nickname “Brotherhood Poet” stems from his role in reciting verses on the Rabaa Al‑Adawiya protest stage in 2013.
The court, however, upheld the prosecution’s case, convicting him of involvement in violent plots and sentencing him to a term of rigorous imprisonment.
