Lima, Peru – In a miraculous turn of events, a 28-year-old Peruvian man named Juan Carlos Tello narrowly escaped death after being struck by a cargo train in Lima. The incident occurred on Saturday, March 8, when Tello, who was reportedly intoxicated, fell asleep on the railway tracks.
CCTV footage captured the dramatic moment when the train collided with Tello, flinging him beneath the locomotive. Despite the severity of the impact, Tello managed to roll out from under the train and onto the nearby pavement, conscious and alive2. Onlookers quickly rushed to his aid, and Tello, with minor injuries to his left arm, was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
General Javier Avalos, a security official for the town of Ate in Lima, commented on the incident, stating, "The train knocked him over but through some miracle did not kill him. He apparently was in a state of intoxication, fell asleep along the train tracks and did not feel the train coming".
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of train-related accidents in Peru. In August 2024, a young man wearing headphones was struck and killed by a cargo train while attempting to cross the tracks on the same train line2. Additionally, in May of the previous year, a collision between a passenger bus and a cargo train in the central Peruvian district of La Oroya resulted in four fatalities and over 30 injuries.
