Aden — The United States has called on the UN Security Council to take decisive and practical measures to stop the flow of weapons and financial support to Yemen’s Houthi militia, warning that continued external backing threatens international shipping and undermines regional peace efforts.

During an official briefing, the US representative urged the Council to establish a new maritime enforcement mechanism to implement the arms embargo on the Houthis. The proposed system would enhance surveillance of suspect vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, expand inspection authorities, and coordinate with regional partners to intercept illicit shipments.

The US cited the UN Panel of Experts’ 2025 report, which documented systematic violations of Security Council sanctions, including the smuggling of drone components, missile parts, and advanced electronics through covert maritime and land networks. 

These transfers, the US warned, are fueling Houthi attacks on commercial vessels and destabilizing the region.

Washington also called for expanded individual sanctions targeting entities involved in financing and arming the Houthis, and urged international financial institutions to strengthen tracking mechanisms. The US emphasized that the response must be collective, firm, and sustained to be effective.
