Baku – Authorities in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, have detained a group of tourists from Saudi Arabia after they engaged in what was described as “highly mocking behavior” while visiting Martyrs’ Alley, a memorial site dedicated to those who lost their lives in 1990 during the conflict with the Soviet Union in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Local media reported that the incident sparked widespread outrage among Azerbaijani citizens, given the sanctity and national symbolism of the site, which stands as one of the country’s most important memorial landmarks.

Authorities in Baku confirmed that investigations are underway with the detained tourists, though no further details have yet been released regarding their fate or the legal measures that may be taken against them.

Martyrs’ Alley is regarded as a major national site in Azerbaijan, frequently visited by officials and foreign delegations in honor of the victims of January 20, 1990, who were killed during clashes with Soviet forces.
