Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held separate meetings on Tuesday with US Deputy Presidential Special Envoy to the Middle East, Morgan Ortagus; Senior Bureau Official for Near Eastern Affair, Tim Lenderking; and former Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, on the sidelines of the Middle East–America Dialogue (MEAD) Conference in Abu Dhabi.
The MEAD Conference, held from 7 to 8 April, brought top foreign policy leaders together for high-level, nonpartisan discussions to shape policy and strengthen regional cooperation.
There, Abdelatty held bilateral meetings with regional and international officials.
US Officials
According to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, Abdelatty met with Ortagus and Lenderking and addressed the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip and its escalating violence in the occupied West Bank.
Minister Abdelatty emphasized the importance of restoring calm, consolidating the three-phased ceasefire agreement in Gaza, and ensuring the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian, medical, and shelter aid to alleviate Palestinian suffering.
He also addressed the Egypt-prepared Arab-Islamic plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, which has been endorsed by Arab and Islamic nations, the European Union (EU), Japan, France, and other global players.
He reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to convening a reconstruction conference with the United Nations (UN), the Palestinian Authority (PA), and key international partners.
The FM reaffirmed support for Palestinian aspirations and expressed Egypt’s willingness to boost coordination with the US to advance just and comprehensive peace in the region.
He emphasized the need to create a political framework that would lead to the end of Israel’s occupation of Palestine and support the Palestinian struggle for self-determination based on international legitimacy and relevant UN resolutions. This would ensure the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s rejection of any attempts to displace Palestinians from their historic land, read the statement.
Egypt repeatedly condemned the intensifying Israeli genocide in Gaza and its expanding military operations in the occupied West Bank while continuing to work with Qatar and the US on diplomatic efforts to swiftly and fully restore the ceasefire in Gaza.
During a meeting with a Fatah delegation on Saturday, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s firm rejection of Israeli attempts to isolate Gaza from the West Bank or displace Palestinians, emphasizing Cairo’s full support for the Palestinian Authority.
The meeting also touched on broader regional developments, including the situations in Lebanon, Syria, Libya, Sudan, and Yemen.
Both sides stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.
Abdelatty's meeting with Ortagus and Lenderking also covered the strategic Egyptian-American partnership — spanning over four decades — and explored ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation to serve mutual interests and elevate the partnership.
Former Lebanese PM
A ministry statement read that Egypt’s top diplomat also met with former Lebanese Prime Minister Mikati during a separate meeting on the sidelines of the MEAD Conference.
Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for newly elected President Joseph Aoun and the Lebanese government, urging Israel’s withdrawal from the five disputed points and full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
For his part, Mikati expressed his appreciation for President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Egypt’s continued support for Lebanon, which he experienced firsthand during his time in office.
He also shared his perspective on the situation in Lebanon and broader regional developments.
Abdelatty and Mikati also addressed restoring the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, releasing captives and prisoners, and implementing the Arab-Islamic reconstruction plan.
