Tehran — Iran announced the referral of several senior state officials to the judiciary as nationwide protests continue to escalate.

The move comes after days of unrest sparked by severe economic hardships and mounting calls for political change.

According to the semi-official Tasnim news agency, the head of Iran’s Inspection Organization stated: “Cases of some senior officials who failed to fulfill their duties in meeting public needs have been referred to the judiciary.”

He added that companies, factories, and banks that have not taken steps to meet their foreign currency obligations will be given a one-week deadline.

Failure to comply within that period will result in judicial action. Tasnim also reported that a lawsuit has been filed against the Central Bank over alleged negligence, with referral to the judiciary expected soon.

The protests, which have swept across major cities, have grown from grievances over economic hardship into broader demands for the downfall of the regime.

The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that at least 646 people have been killed, including 505 demonstrators, 113 security personnel, and seven bystanders.

Meanwhile, internet disruptions remain widespread across the country, according to monitoring group NetBlocks.

Iran now faces mounting international pressure. Western governments have withdrawn ambassadors, while U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened military strikes. On Monday, Trump warned that any country engaging in trade with Iran would face a 25 percent tariff on commerce with the United States.
