Liverpool coach reveals reason for PSG defeat

Liverpool manager Arne Slot called his side's Champions League elimination by Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday the "best game" he has been involved in, but admitted the Premier League leaders were unlucky in the penalty shootout.

PSG had dominated the first leg a week earlier but came to Anfield 1-0 down after Harvey Elliott snatched victory for the Reds at Parc des Princes.

The roles were reversed on Tuesday as Slot was left complaining after Ousmane Dembele's 12th-minute goal was the only one scored in the regular 90 minutes, while two 15-minute periods of extra time failed to change the result.

PSG then triumphed 4-1 on penalties after DarWin Nunez and Curtis Jones saw their shots saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma, following KosovaPress.

It was the best game of football I've ever been involved in. It was an incredible performance, especially if you compare it to last week," Slot said after the match.

"It had everything you wanted from a game. From a Liverpool perspective, we could have at least wanted a draw after 90 minutes. We were creating chances and then we were 1-0 down. We were unlucky after last week," he added.

Liverpool topped the Champions League group stage after winning their first seven games. Slott, however, questioned whether the new format rewards finishing top after being paired with one of Europe's top teams in the last 16.

"We come out in a way that impressed Europe, but it's something to consider how much it's worth to finish first in the league table if you face PSG in the next round," the Dutchman added.

"Of course it's a shock to be eliminated. I can say that last season we weren't involved in the Champions League, two seasons ago we went out against Madrid and lost 5-2 at home," he said in the end.
