In a tragic incident, Iraqi journalist Laith Mohammad Rida was shot and killed in central Baghdad during a dispute with a suspect believed to be part of a government official’s security detail.

The altercation, which took place in the Al-Arsat area, escalated into gunfire, resulting in Rida's immediate death.

The Baghdad Police Command confirmed that Rida’s death was the result of a criminal act and not an assassination. The suspect was later surrounded by an armed force in the Abu Ghraib area, west of Baghdad.

This incident has sparked controversy and highlighted the dangers faced by journalists in Iraq, where press freedom remains under threat.

The Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights (IOHR) has warned that journalists in Iraq live in a constant state of fear and anxiety due to the impunity enjoyed by perpetrators who commit violations against press workers.
