Cairo — Authorities in Egypt are investigating a mass escape from the Adaman Psychiatric Hospital, where dozens of patients reportedly fled the facility late Saturday night.

Security sources confirmed that the incident occurred after a breach in the hospital’s perimeter, though the exact number of escapees has not yet been disclosed.

Witnesses in the surrounding neighborhood said they saw groups of patients leaving the compound in confusion, prompting immediate calls to local police.

Emergency units were dispatched to secure the area and assist residents, while hospital staff worked to account for missing patients.

Officials stated that an internal inquiry has been launched to determine whether negligence or deliberate assistance played a role in the escape.

The Ministry of Health emphasized that patient safety remains a priority and urged the public not to approach individuals who may appear distressed, advising instead to contact authorities.

The Adaman Psychiatric Hospital, located in northern Egypt, is one of the country’s largest mental health facilities.

The incident has sparked renewed debate over security standards in psychiatric institutions and the need for stronger oversight.

Police patrols continue in nearby districts as efforts to locate and return the escaped patients remain underway.
