Aden — The European Union’s maritime security mission, ASPIDES, has successfully protected 1,320 commercial vessels navigating the Red Sea and surrounding waters over the past 21 months, according to a statement released by EU defense officials.

The mission, launched in response to escalating threats to international shipping lanes, continues to operate in coordination with regional and international partners to ensure the safety of maritime traffic amid persistent security challenges.

EU officials reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait, and Gulf of Aden — key corridors for global trade. The statement emphasized that threats posed by Houthi militias, including attempted drone and missile attacks, arms smuggling, and piracy, remain a serious concern.

“ASPIDES will continue to provide robust protection for civilian shipping and uphold international maritime law in one of the world’s most strategically vital waterways,” the EU mission command said.

The operation involves naval escorts, aerial surveillance, and intelligence-sharing mechanisms designed to deter hostile actions and support de-escalation efforts in the region. European naval assets have also assisted in monitoring illicit trafficking and unauthorized maritime activity.

The announcement comes amid renewed tensions in the Red Sea, where several commercial vessels have reported near-miss incidents in recent months. Shipping companies have welcomed the EU’s continued presence, citing improved safety and confidence in regional trade routes.
