NEW YORK — The United Nations is intensifying its efforts to support reconstruction and humanitarian relief in Gaza, Syria, and Sudan, amid mounting challenges in conflict-affected regions.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher outlined the scale of the crises and the organization’s commitment to saving lives, restoring stability, and ensuring safe conditions for displaced civilians.

Fletcher described the humanitarian and political challenges as “complex and immense,” stressing that dialogue, resource mobilization, and safe return for civilians remain central to the UN’s mission. He emphasized that, in line with the UN Charter, the organization seeks to deliver aid to hundreds of thousands  if not millions of people in dire need.

Gaza: Rebuilding for the Future
Addressing the situation in Gaza, Fletcher characterized the humanitarian scene as “extremely difficult,” noting that survivors urgently require housing and children need to return to safe homes. He underscored that reconstruction demands the mobilization of “the entire world” and all humanitarian institutions to deliver relief and rebuild the devastated sector, with a vision of justice, fairness, and peace.

Sudan: Funding and Access to Conflict Zones
On Sudan, Fletcher highlighted the severity of the crisis, recalling his visit to Darfur where he met survivors of atrocities in El-Fasher. He stressed that humanitarian operations face critical obstacles, including insufficient funding and restricted access to conflict zones. He called for urgent financial support and safe corridors to enable aid delivery and protect civilians displaced by ongoing violence.
