Anti-government activist in her 70s arrested for plotting to assassinate Netanyahu

An anti-government activist from Tel Aviv was arrested two weeks ago after she conspired to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, police said Wednesday.

According to police, the woman, in her 70s, was arrested after she spoke with close contacts in the anti-government protest movement about the assassination attempt. Her identity and address are under a court-issued gag order.

The suspect is the latest in a series of Israelis to be nabbed in recent months for allegedly trying to kill Netanyahu, or inciting to his murder. In 2024, multiple suspects were accused of assassination attempts against the prime minister and other senior office holders, past and present. As part of its wide-ranging effort to build a network of Israeli spies, Iran has also tried to recruit potential assassins.

The suspect in this case is alleged to have spoken with other protesters about acquiring weapons and information about the prime minister’s security detail. She is suspected of planning to kill Netanyahu with an explosive device, according to the Kan public broadcaster, which first reported the news.

On Wednesday evening, Ynet reported that the woman is suspected of having a terminal illness. She allegedly moved forward with the assassination plans after her diagnosis and planned to “take Bibi with me to the grave,” the publication reported, citing an investigation. Ynet said that the plans reached Gonen Ben Itzhak, a prominent protester and former Shin Bet security service agent, who alerted authorities.

The Shin Bet arrested the suspect, who was interrogated by the police’s unit for serious and international crimes. Channel 12 reported that she partially confessed to the allegations.

She was subsequently released with a restraining order against approaching the premier and government buildings.

Criminal and terror charges are set to be filed against her on Thursday. Her defense lawyers declined to comment to Kan pending the indictment.

Netanyahu has repeatedly railed against his political critics claiming that they were inciting against him and his family. He has blamed the incitement on the justice system, law enforcement, and Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara, accusing them of not doing enough to curb it.

Netanyahu himself has been repeatedly accused by the left over the years of encouraging incitement that led to the 1995 assassination of former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, or at least of contributing to the incendiary political climate that led to the murder. He has denied such claims.

His rivals also accuse him of regularly inciting hatred against the country’s center-left either directly or through his loyalists.
