Washington Rejects UN Two-State Solution Conference, Calling It Ill-Timed and Harmful to Peace Efforts

The United States has officially declined participation in a United Nations-hosted conference aimed at promoting a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, labeling the initiative as “unproductive” and “ill-timed.”
The three-day summit, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, began this week at UN headquarters in New York and has drawn criticism from U.S. officials who argue it undermines ongoing diplomatic efforts.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce described the conference as a “publicity stunt” that risks prolonging the war in Gaza, emboldening Hamas, and obstructing meaningful negotiations.
“This is a slap in the face to the victims of October 7th and a reward for terrorism,” Bruce stated, emphasizing that the U.S. remains committed to direct diplomacy rather than symbolic gestures.
The U.S. also criticized French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent recognition of a Palestinian state, asserting that such moves “embolden Hamas” and complicate ceasefire efforts. While Washington refrained from directly addressing Saudi Arabia’s role in the conference, analysts note the administration’s cautious approach reflects broader strategic interests.
Despite its absence from the summit, the U.S. reiterated its dedication to pursuing a lasting peace in the region through “real-world efforts” and bilateral engagement. The conference continues amid growing humanitarian concerns in Gaza, where over 59,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed since October 2023.
