Washington – The United States has expressed “deep concern” over recent remarks by Sudan’s military leadership advocating military solutions to the country’s crisis and setting preconditions for any ceasefire.
Tommy Pigott, Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, wrote on the social media platform X: “While tens of millions of Sudanese are suffering, Sudanese military leaders must pursue a path toward peace, not prolong the conflict.”
The U.S. diplomat stressed that achieving lasting and stable peace requires negotiated arrangements that bring an immediate end to violence, facilitate sustained humanitarian access, and chart a course toward a permanent ceasefire and civilian dialogue.
The ongoing war in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than 11 million, creating what the United Nations has described as “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.”
