US President Donald Trump said he spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by phone on Wednesday for about an hour, a day after a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump said in a social media post that the call was made to "reconcile the requests and needs of Russia and Ukraine" as he seeks a ceasefire agreement between the two countries.

"We are on the right track," Trump added, saying he had asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz to provide more details about the conversation in a statement.

Trump spoke by phone on Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin about a partial ceasefire.

Putin agreed not to target energy infrastructure but refused to support a full ceasefire for 30 days.

The call comes three weeks after their "disastrous" meeting at the White House.

At the time, a "strong" verbal confrontation took place in the Oval Office between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The two presidents were speaking to the media before their rhetoric toward each other became increasingly harsh. Trump told Zelenskyy, "You're gambling on World War III. Either you make a deal or we walk away."

He added, "You're not acting at all like you're grateful. That's not nice."
