The funeral for Pope Francis will be held on Saturday, April 26, at 10:00 a.m. (0800 GMT) at St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican has announced.

Francis, the first South American pontiff and the first non-European pope in over 1,300 years, died on Monday at the age of 88.

The Catholic Church has since entered an official period of mourning.

The pope’s body will lie in state inside St. Peter’s Basilica in the days leading up to the funeral, giving the faithful an opportunity to pay their final respects.

In line with his wishes, he is expected to be buried in the Vatican Grottoes.

Several world leaders have already confirmed their attendance at the funeral. Polish presidential couple, Andrzej Duda and Agata Kornhauser-Duda announced their trip to Rome on Tuesday.

President Duda said that the Pope Francis’ funeral day will be a day of national mourning in Poland.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who frequently clashed with Francis over immigration policy, said he and former First Lady Melania Trump would travel to Rome.

“Melania and I will be going to the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. “We look forward to being there!”

French President Emmanuel Macron has also confirmed his attendance, the BBC reported.

Other leaders expected at the ceremony include Argentine President Javier Milei and, according to a source cited by Newsweek, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
