Iran’s Foreign Minister, in an op-ed published by The Jakarta Post of Indonesia, dismissed the recent move by the three European parties to the JCPOA—Britain, France, and Germany—to trigger the “snapback” mechanism, describing it as unlawful, illegitimate, and a serious threat to both Europe’s credibility and the 2015 nuclear agreement.
Seyed Abbas Araghchi stressed that countries that fail to honor their commitments cannot benefit from the advantages of the agreement they have undermined. He added: “No action can erase the sequence of events that led Iran to adopt compensatory measures under the JCPOA.”
He further noted that by aligning with U.S. unilateral sanctions and even supporting Washington’s military strikes against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities, the European trio has revealed its role in enabling hostile American policies.
Araghchi warned that Europe’s decision to activate the snapback mechanism will cause irreparable damage to its international standing, and if this course is not reversed, the European parties will be excluded from future diplomatic processes.
The Foreign Minister reiterated that while Iran remains committed to its inalienable right to peaceful nuclear energy, it has consistently shown readiness for constructive dialogue aimed at reaching a fair and balanced agreement—one that respects national sovereignty while addressing mutual concerns, including the removal of unjust sanctions.
He also referred to the recent agreement between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), brokered by Egypt, describing it as “a new chapter in Iran’s nuclear diplomacy,” under which cooperation with the Agency will continue within a mutually agreed framework. Araghchi emphasized: “This agreement will remain valid so long as no hostile action is taken against Iran, including the reimposition of UN Security Council resolutions that were previously revoked.”
In another part of his article, he condemned the recent Israeli attacks on several countries in the region, including Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Qatar, and Yemen, calling them blatant acts of aggression and repeated violations of international law. He added: “The inaction of international institutions in the face of Israel’s crimes has undermined the very foundations of international law and placed the security of West Asia at grave risk.”
The Foreign Minister concluded by expressing gratitude for the Indonesian government and people’s steadfast support for Palestine and their condemnation of Israeli aggression, stressing the urgent need for unity among Muslim countries to counter double standards in the international system and to reform flawed multilateral structures. He reiterated firmly: “Iran will never compromise on its sovereignty, rights, or security.”
