A German backpacker who went missing in western Australia almost two weeks ago has been found alive, media reported on Friday.

Police have confirmed that the person found is 26-year-old Carolina Wilga, Australia's Sydney Morning Herald reported.

"She's been ravaged by mosquitoes. She's obviously been through an amazing journey, a trauma, and no doubt will be a testimony demonstrating her bravery in the circumstances out there," Western Australia police inspector Martin Glynn told reporters.

A passerby ran into Wilga on a path in the bush, Australian media reported.

Her reappearance follows a large-scale search that dragged on for days.

The search for Wilga

The German backpacker had last been seen in the town of Beacon, north-east of Perth on June 29. The first clue police found since then was coming across her van on Thursday in a remote area of the Australian outback.

Wilga's phone had been switched off, with local media reports saying she had previously kept in regular contact with her family in Germany.

Western Australia (WA) Police Acting Inspector Jessica Securo told broadcaster ABC that the search Wilga had been concentrated
around her Mitsubishi van that had been found near Karroun Hill, around 300 kilometres (186 miles) north-east of Perth.

Van found stuck in dense bushland

Police said the vehicle appeared to have suffered mechanical issues and was found with plastic orange traction tracks placed beneath the rear wheels, apparently after getting stuck in the terrain.

Securo told ABC Radio Perth, before reports she had been found emerged, that she had likely become lost in that area.

"The terrain — it's outback country and there's large rocky outcrops, so although there's a number of tracks, you can see how it would be easy to become lost or disorientated in that area if you didn't know it well."
